Waikato-Tainui is a leading iwi organisation in Aotearoa. It develops and implements initiatives to achieve outcomes for Waikato.  The activities of Waikato-Tainui are informed by Whakatupuranga 2050 – a blueprint for the long-term cultural, social, environmental, and economic advancement of the iwi.

Prudent management of iwi-owned assets and settlements will enable the realisation of Whakatupuranga 2050.  Waikato-Tainui has an investment portfolio of approximately $1.57 billion net assets which is managed by wholly-owned subsidiary Tainui Group Holdings as Chief Investment Officer. This investment portfolio is diverse and includes property, private equity, equities, fixed income, natural resources, cash, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi settlement receivables.

The Group Investment Committee (“GIC”) is an investment advisory and monitoring Committee. It oversees policy and monitors the performance of the investments made by the Chief Investment Officer and reports directly to the Executive Board, Te Arataura.

A vacancy for an Independent Member has arisen on the GIC. The independent GIC Nominating Committee has commenced a process to recommend an outstanding candidate for appointment to the GIC in 2023.

The successful candidate will have the skills highlighted below.

• Deep technical expertise and professional credibility in the governance and management of financial investments relevant to the current holdings and long-term objectives of the Waikato iwi.
• Understanding of Statements of Investment Policy and Objectives (SIPOs).
• Understanding of Chief Investment Officer environments.
• Knowledge and experience with impact investments (desirable).
• Relevant compliance and risk management experience.
• Values, knowledge, and interpersonal skills such as Te Reo Maaori and tikanga literacy, which are conducive to being effective in a multi-stakeholder, post-settlement iwi and Maaori environment.

The Nominating Committee is particularly interested in meeting candidates for this role with the capability and aspiration to potentially step into the Chair role within two years.
