Waikato-Tainui places a strong emphasis on the importance of Te Reo Maaori and Tikanga - it is one of the key strategic objectives of Whakatupuranga 2050.
Tikanga Ora Reo Ora is the strategy for Waikato-Tainui. It encourages the use and preservation of Te Reo Maaori and Waikato Tikanga.
The overall aim of the strategy is:
‘Whakahokia te reo ki ngaa tara aa-whare. Haapaingia te tikanga ki te tuanui o te whare’
- The language echoes in the walls of our houses;
- Cultural practices are held in high regard;
- The language and cultural practices are etched in the hearts of the people in 2050;
- The language and cultural practices are strong within homes, marae, schools and communities;
- The Waikato dialect thrives; and
- The cultural practices of Waikato are upheld.
Waananga reo programmes offered through the Reo and Tikanga team at Waikato-Tainui:
A waananga that caters for taiohi who are beginner to intermediate speakers of te reo Maaori for taiohi to advance their use of te reo Maaori and practice of Waikato tikanga.
Te Pae Kaakaa
A series of waananga where our reo, tikanga and tribal knowledge is advanced for our future upholders of our paepae.
Te Reo Kaakaho
A series of waananga to advance tribal members' ability to use te reo Maaori and progress their practice of Waikato tikanga.
Te Reo Kaapuia Koohungahunga
A series of waananga that aims to strengthen the reo, tikanga and tribal knowledge of our teachers from koohanga to early childhood education providers.
Te Reo Kaapuia Kura
A waananga that aims to strengthen the reo, tikanga and tribal knowledge of our teachers from primary to tertiary providers.
Te Reo Aratau
A waananga that caters for taiohi who are advanced speakers of te reo Maaori to advance their use of te reo Maaori and practice of Waikato tikanga.
Te Reo Uukaipoo
A series of tailored resource packs where we will work with whaanau to ensure they are supported by a dedicated kaiako to speak more te reo across our many homes and different communities.
