Taking a holistic approach to supporting the wellbeing of our peepe.
What is Taonga Peepe?
Taonga Peepe is a whaanau based initiative given affect by the Waikato-Tainui Koiora Strategy.
A significant part of the wellbeing of our whaanau is their sense of belonging – knowing who they are and where they come from. Through the giving of taonga to our Peepe, Waikato-Tainui gives personal recognition to the intrinsic connection they have with their iwi, hapuu and marae.
Along with their Taonga kits, they will also receive information outlining opportunities to support whaanau and nurture the wellbeing and development of their peepe.
The team wishes to acknowledge the initiative partners Waikato Plunket Whirihia team and the Waikato DHB Whare Ora Team for their support.
How can I get involved?
Whaanau will need to register peepe online here, contacting Moera Solomon or Teeny Tukere on 0800TAINUI, or by calling into the office and filling out a hard copy form. We will need a copy of peepes birth certificate and as their parent or caregiver, you will need to ensure that at least one of you are also registered.
We have 50 Taonga Peepe kit’s to send out to the first 50 whaanau to register your peepe, 6 months or under, by March 2020.
The Taonga Peepe Kit will then be sent to the address that has been provided in the tribal registration of Peepe.
What’s in the Taonga Peepe kit?
The kit contains a range of carefully selected items that will support whaanau to care for their peepe. These include;
- A personal pounamu pendant.
- Pukapuka Puipui Aki, a memory book to capture the milestones of peepe.
- Pukapuka Taurite Maaori which supports the visual and cognitive development of peepe.
- Woolen Blanket crocheted by the Maaori Womens Welfare League.
- Kaakahu with embroidered symbol for Aroha.
