Incumbent councillors Tipa Mahuta (Ngā Hau E Wha) and Kataraina Hodge (Ngā Tai ki Uta) were re-elected unopposed onto Waikato Regional Council and sworn in today.
Tipa Mahuta is excited about the opportunity this presents to continue seeing through the objectives set out in Tai Tipu, Tai Pari, Taiao objectives.
“I think if we’re not at the table then we’re being discussed like a topic, and that’s not appropriate in this day and age. We are the Treaty partner, we are that voice at council and to be that conscience because people left a huge legacy like the Waikato River Settlement, and we have to see that enacted for the wellbeing of our whaanau.”
They are joined by 12 other mainstream constituency councillors as all 14 now charge on with attempting to bring about a Healthy Environment, Strong economies and vibrant communities in the Waikato region over the next three years.
Kataraina Hodge of Ngaati Raukawa will take up the deputy chairperson role, with Russ Rimmington (Hamilton constituency), taking up the chair role. This is the first time for both in these roles.
We want to congratulate both wahine toa of Tainui waka, and celebrate this day with you!
