Mokopuna Ora is a partnership between Waikato-Tainui and Oranga Tamariki.

The partnership aims to reduce the number of Waikato-Tainui mokopuna entering state care; increase the number of mokopuna already in state care being placed within whaanau, hapuu and iwi; support whaanau into the role of primary caregiver; and, connect mokopuna to their tribal identity.

To understand more about our mahi, watch this video clip about how we’ve worked closely with one whaanau to ensure our tamariki and mokopuna are well cared for:

What is Mokopuna Ora?

Mokopuna Ora is a strategic partnership where Waikato-Tainui work with Oranga Tamariki to protect the welfare and wellbeing of our youngest members of society, our tamariki and mokopuna.

We advocate to ensure our Waikato-Tainui tamariki and mokopuna, if involved with Oranga Tamariki, stay with their whaanau. If for some reason they can’t, then we work with the wider whaanau to ensure they are well connected to their whakapapa.

When do we work with whaanau?

It’s an important part of the process that the cultural needs and ultimate safety of our tamariki and mokopuna is a priority when Oranga Tamariki works on issues with our whaanau.

So where ever possible, we are at the front end, when whaanau come to the attention of Oranga Tamariki, to advocate and work with whaanau right through the process.

Our ultimate goal is to ensure we have no Waikato-Tainui tamariki and mokopuna in Oranga Tamariki care.

How do we work with Oranga Tamariki?

There are multiple ways that Waikato-Tainui works with Oranga Tamariki across strategic issues and advocating for whaanau-led solutions.

We do this by:

  • Ensuring the voice and concerns of Waikato-Tainui whaanau are heard;
  • Co-designing sustainable solutions with whaanau that meet shared aspirations; and
  • Having dedicated Iwi Support Advisors to advocate for whaanau while working alongside Oranga Tamariki staff, to model and influence a way that works for whaanau.

Who are Iwi Support Advisors?

Iwi Support Advisors are independent Waikato-Tainui kaimahi that work within Oranga Tamariki to support tamariki and mokopuna that whakapapa to Waikato-Tainui. They work directly with whaanau whose tamariki and mokopuna have come to the attention of Oranga Tamariki.

This process has seen many mokopuna remain in whaanau care due to advocacy, information and empowering whaanau-led solutions to make necessary changes for the care of tamariki and mokopuna.

Where does Mokopuna Ora Operate?

Mokopuna Ora is currently run from two pilot sites within Waikato-Tainui region at Papakura and Waikato Rural North Oranga Tamariki offices, being the two offices with the most Waikato-Tainui mokopuna.

If you are not domiciled in one of the pilot sites, our Iwi Support Advisors can provide advice over the phone and connect you with services in the area.
