Maori to Lead New COVID Tomorrow

Thursday, 9 July 2020

Agility and future employment planning for the Maaori workforce is one of the key focus points of Whano; a new report launched today that examines the changing employment landscape.

Waikato-Tainui has joined with Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu and Berl to commission the report which explores the forces and impacts known to affect the workforce in Aotearoa both historically and in the present and how these influence career pathways for Maaori.

Waikato-Tainui Chief Executive says Whano identifies a number of key factors that will shape the future workforce which is critical for our people who are planning their career pathways.

“COVID-19 has bought these issues into a much sharper focus and we are acutely aware of the need to identify opportunities and create the ecosystem for our people to thrive in a changing and dynamic employment landscape.”

“Our history has taught us to be both cautious and adaptive but I have faith in our work force demographic which is younger and growing rapidly. This positions us well to take a leadership role in leading our country through the post COVID-19 rebuilding phase,” says Donna Flavell.

Among other findings, Whano identifies systemic and structural racism as historic barriers where Maaori were a minority and struggled against the backbone of our blue-collar workforce.

Donna says the entire workforce landscape has evolved significantly and Iwi organisations are uniquely placed to support their people to not just re-imagine but build a much better future for their whaanau.
